My Volunteer Story: Melissa Nsiah

Happy National Volunteer Week! The theme for 2021 is “The value of one, the power of many” which is particularly apt given our distanced work right now. While the Museum is temporarily closed, our volunteers remain as busy as ever from home. Our volunteers connect visitors to Toronto’s railway past through all they do, whether working on archival projects, advising on restoration work, or sitting on our Marketing Committee. We can’t wait to welcome our team back in person when it’s safe to do so!

We’re back again with another volunteer profile: meet Melissa Nsiah. Melissa is a recent graduate of the Strategic Relationship Marketing program at George Brown College and is a key member of the Museum’s Marketing Committee. In addition, she’s been working on a Museum membership program that we are very excited to launch!

Hi Melissa! We’re excited to share more about your work here at TRM. Please tell us a little bit about yourself.

Hello! I’m Melissa Nsiah and I’m a part of the Marketing Committee at The Toronto Railway Museum. I recently completed the Strategic Relationship Marketing program at George Brown College, which led me to the museum. I’m passionate about marketing strategies and customer success.

How did you first hear about volunteering at TRM? How did you get involved?

I first heard about volunteering at TRM from classmates of mine from George Brown College, who had recommended the volunteer program. I got involved by joining the Marketing Committee, which allowed me to apply what I had learned from GBC.

Tell us about your work! What was your most recent volunteer project? What did you have to do to accomplish it?

My most recent projects were for the new Friends of the TRM Membership program. They included providing recommendations for marketing segmentation and giving suggestions for an overall marketing plan. In addition, I also worked on the program’s email launch campaign.

Why do you volunteer at the Toronto Railway Museum?

Volunteering for the museum has allowed me to work with some of my interests, including marketing and history. Applying marketing strategies in the context of the Toronto Railway Museum and its efforts has been a great experience that I have been glad to take on. I also receive valuable feedback that has allowed me to grow and improve.
