May is Museum Month/Mai, Mois des Musées is an annual program run by the Ontario Museum Association celebrating the contributions of Ontario’s over 700 museums, 37,000
volunteers and 11,000 workers. It coincides with International Museum Day, on May 18th, organized by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) to showcase the impact that museums have on their communities. With this year’s theme being “museums for education and research”, we are encouraging individuals across Ontario to consider the vital contributions museums make as spaces of cultural understanding, learning and innovation.
Every year on May 18 since 1977, ICOM has organized International Museum Day (IMD). On this day, participating museums plan creative events and activities related to the IMD theme, engage with their public, and highlight the importance of the role of museums in their communities. This year’s theme focuses on museums for education and research, and highlights the impact of museums as “dynamic educational institutions fostering learning, discovery, and cultural understanding”.
